Tver is the center of a large region and one of the oldest cities in Central Russia. In the history of Ancient Russia, Tver, being the capital of a powerful principality, played no less a role than Moscow: the power-loving and cunning local princes, rivals of Moscow, repeatedly tried to subjugate the vast East Slavic lands.
